What changes are proposed?
The City is proposing to create a Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3 (GCLR3) Traffic area spanning from Mermaid Beach to Burleigh Heads (refer Figure 2). Like previous light rail stages, the proposed traffic area is based on a 400-metre walking catchment from the GCLR3 corridor.
It is proposed that the GCLR3 Traffic Area will have a three-hour time limit from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday (unless otherwise signed and excludes public holidays).
What is a Traffic Area?
Traffic areas are geographical areas with time-limited parking. Traffic areas are identified in locations where there is a high demand for parking spaces, and parking time limits are implemented to allow more people to access those parking spaces.
Parking time limits create a higher turnover of the sought after parking spaces, providing fair and equitable access to parking spaces for the community, and improving the customer turnover for nearby businesses.
To reduce the amount of parking signage within the traffic area, parking signage is placed at the boundaries (access routes) of the identified traffic area.
Why do we need a new Traffic Area?
The construction of GCLR3 will see higher demand for long duration parking in local streets from commuters using the light rail.
Time limits are applied where demand exceeds available parking spaces, which allows for more people to use the parking spaces. The proposed traffic area will assist local businesses by maintaining parking availability for their customers. Some time limit signage has already been installed on side roads to assist with customer turnover for businesses within the GCLR3 construction works area.
Residents living within the proposed traffic area will need to comply with parking requirements unless you have a valid parking permit. See here for further information regarding parking permits and eligibility.
