South Stradbroke Island Draft plan

The City is leading a project on South Stradbroke Island with two key goals - to establish a 'whole of island' plan for the island that supports community needs and improves amenities, and to investigate opportunities for the provision of Nature-Based Tourism.

South Stradbroke Island

South Stradbroke Island is a stunning and much-loved coastal destination, known by locals for its exceptional surf breaks, natural beauty and outdoor activity options. Sitting just 200 metres north of the most northern point of The Spit, it’s a destination for visitors to boat, fish, camp, kayak and generally immerse themselves in its unique natural environment. A whole of island plan for this popular area will create opportunities to deliver improved amenities and facilities for locals of South Stradbroke Island.

Nature-Based Tourism

The whole of island plan for South Stradbroke Island will also aim to enhance the overall nature-based tourism offerings available for visitors to the island, as part of the City’s Nature-Based Tourism Program. Nature-based tourism provides visitors with unique experiences in natural settings that combine enjoyment, education and cultural awareness, while focussing on sustainability and conservation.

Some examples of nature-based tourism can include;

  • adventure and recreation activities, such as kayaking and other eco-friendly outdoor adventures
  • guided nature walks and cultural tours including First-Nations-led experiences
  • sustainable accommodation (for example, eco-cabins, glamping or camping options, or off-grid cabins).

We want to create nature-based tourism options that work with the delicate ecosystem of the island, while providing a unique experience and accessible experience for visitors to the island and surrounds.

Have Your Say

We want you to have your say on the future of South Stradbroke Island, and about your experiences living in, working in, or visiting the island. We want to know what you love about the area, any challenges you face when you visit the area, and what you would love to see in the future. This will help us to build a shared goal for the future of the area. From this shared goal, we will then draft a whole of island plan for the site. This draft will be shared with stakeholders, locals and the wider community for further feedback later this year.

Have your say on the future of South Stradbroke Island, and help shape the future of this much-loved and naturally beautiful area.

Engagement runs from 28 July until 11 August 2025.
