What changes are proposed?
The City is proposing to expand the existing boundaries of the Bundall/Chevron Island Traffic Area to include a southern Southport area. Refer to the proposed extension area indicated in yellow in Figure 1 below.
This proposed expansion area will have the same parking conditions as the existing Bundall/Chevron Island Traffic Area, with a three-hour time limit from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday.
Existing signage within the proposed expansion area will be removed and replaced with three-hour time limit signage positioned at the access routes of the proposed traffic area.
Residents living within the proposed traffic area will need to comply with parking requirements unless you have a valid parking permit. See here for further information regarding parking permits and eligibility.
What is a Traffic Area?
Traffic areas are geographical areas with time-limited parking. Traffic areas are identified in locations where there is a high demand for parking spaces, and parking time limits are implemented to allow more people to access those parking spaces.
Parking time limits create a higher turnover of the sought after parking spaces, providing fair and equitable access to parking spaces for the community, and improving the customer turnover for nearby businesses.
To reduce the amount of parking signage within the traffic area, parking signage is placed at the boundaries (access routes) of the identified traffic area.
Why does the Traffic Area need changing?
As a result of concerns raised by residents and businesses, residential streets north of the existing traffic area boundary have been identified for inclusion in the traffic area.
In response to the concerns, the City temporarily placed time limit signage within most of the roadways in the proposed expanded traffic area including Regatta Parade, Durham Street, Skiff Street, York Street and Wells Street. The current time limits for parking are two-hours from 8am to 5pm Monday to Friday.
The proposed change removes the need to have parking signs on every street.
