What changes are proposed?
The City of Gold Coast is proposing to develop a new Regional Depot at the former Tugun Quarry site to replace the existing Tugun Depot on Boyd Street.
The current Tugun Depot site was sold in December 2024. The City is now leasing back the existing depot and the adjoining former landfill site to allow operations to continue in the short term while planning and construction of a new, purpose‑built facility is undertaken.
The new Tugun Depot will remain on Boyd Street but will be relocated to the former Tugun Quarry site. Construction of the new Regional Depot is expected to begin in 2027, with operations transitioning to the new facility once construction is complete.
The relocation of the Tugun Depot is necessary due to the sale of the existing depot site and the need to secure a long‑term, fit‑for‑purpose facility to support essential council operations.
The proposed new depot will:
- Provide long‑term operational certainty following the sale of the existing site
- Replace ageing facilities with modern, compliant infrastructure
- Support current and future service demands as the city continues to grow
- Consolidate operations into a purpose‑designed regional depot
- Make use of land that is already disturbed and suitable for depot‑related activities
