Pizzey Park, the Hub and Main Entry 2025

History of Pizzey Park

Pizzey Park was established in 1949 as a landfill site for the city until 1980 when it ceased operation. Over the last 45 years, the site has gradually transformed into a major sporting and recreational precinct for the city.

A remanent of Pizzey Parks landfill past is the leachate pond, which is located between the Skate Park and Pump Track. The pond is currently encircled by dense, weed-infested vegetation, which acts as both a physical and visual barrier to the water. Frequent blue-green algae blooms, indicating high nutrient levels, further compound the challenges associated with the site. Given these conditions and the lake's history, public access to the water is not feasible now or in the future.

As part of project planning, investigations have been conducted to assess the feasibility of reclaiming the pond and converting it into usable recreation space.

Pizzey Park in 2021

In 2021, the City of Gold Coast developed a long-term Master Plan for Pizzey Park in collaboration with local sporting clubs and community organisations. The plan sets out a strategic vision to transform the park into a world-class destination for sport, recreation, and lifestyle, especially in the lead-up to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Key objectives include:

  • Improved traffic flow and safer access.
  • Accessible pathways linking all areas.
  • A green recreational spine through the precinct.
  • High-quality facilities for all levels of sport.
  • A central hub for community celebration and events.

Pizzey Park in 2025

In this phase we are planning the new Action Hub and Community Precinct, which will:

  • Provide high-quality indoor facilities for BMX and skate.
  • Provide multi-use courts for netball, basketball and pickleball.
  • Improve the existing main entrance from Pacific Avenue.
  • Remove the leachate pond to rejuvenate the space by creating 1.5ha of open green space.
  • Implement a Celebration Lawn to host major events.
  • Create a community orientated space for locals to gather and relax whilst enjoying what Pizzey Park has to offer.
