Why is the City upgrading Pizzey Park?

Pizzey Park is currently the premier sport and recreation facility on the Gold Coast, supporting health, fitness and wellbeing across all levels from junior sport to professional athletes.

In 2021, the City endorsed the Pizzey Park Master Plan to ensure our facilities are meeting the increasing demand of the community, especially as we look towards supporting our local athletes and create pathways ahead of the Olympics and Paralympics. The Master Plan guides future upgrades to the park across 10 precincts. This project addresses The Hub and Main Entry upgrades.

What is the scope of the project?

This stage of the Pizzey Park upgrade will look to:

    1. Introduce the Action Hub which provides an indoor high-performance training facility for world-class athletes while supporting growth of emerging sports (BMX, skate, scooter).
    2. Provide bookable community spaces.
    3. Introduce a café and new toilets to the northeast of the park.
    4. Introduce a new destination playground.
    5. Create a celebration lawn to support community and sports events.
    6. Introduce pathway, wayfinding and lighting upgrades to improve connectivity and safety.
    7. Upgrade the access into the site from Pacific Parade .
    8. Rationalise and formalise parking considering parking opportunities across all of Pizzey Park.
    9. Remove the leachate pond to create additional community open space

Why has the Action Hub been introduced to this precinct?

In 2024, the City identified an opportunity to enhance the Gold Coast’s extreme sports offering by introducing an indoor action sports centre within the City’s premier sporting precinct. While this facility will cater for professional BMX and skate athletes, this is an investment for our local community, complementing key components of the park that are already driving high visitation to the precinct, particularly for our younger community members.

After evaluating multiple locations, the City selected Pizzey Park as it is ideally located to complement the existing outdoor international standard skate park and pump track. This premier facility can replicate Olympic competition environments which will attract global competitions and support the growth of our local upcoming talent ahead of the 2032 Games.

How will the Action Hub and Community Precinct contribute to the local economy?

The new Action Hub and Community Precinct will strengthen the Gold Coast’s reputation for action sports and enhance our lifestyle offerings, making the city a more attractive place to live and visit. Designed with the Gold Coast identity in mind, it is expected to draw major action sports events and visitors, acting as a key drawcard for the region and boosting the local economy.

How will this project affect traffic in the area?

A traffic and parking study has been completed to assess the impacts of the proposed development. The assessment identified the need to upgrade the Pacific Avenue / Sonia Street intersection to reduce congestion and improve safety.

The intersection upgrade will include a formalised pedestrian crossing, making it safer for people to walk to the site. The upgrade will provide better connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists (for example, crossing from Pizzey Park to the north-eastern side of Pacific Avenue) and a rationalisation of the site’s entry points.

Together, these changes will create a clearer, more defined entry to the precinct.

How much land is being renewed for use by the community?

Assessment of the ecological value of the park has revealed opportunities to better utilise areas of the park that are not of significant ecological value and return this land for community benefit.

The leachate pond if removed will provide approximately 1.5ha of open space to be returned to community use. The Action Hub will contribute an additional 1.5 hectares of indoor sports uses.

How will car parking needs be met?

The traffic and parking assessment that has been undertaken found that there is a suitable area within Pizzey Park to provide additional supply of car parking to accommodate the Action Hub and Community Precinct, whilst also providing an overall net gain of parking space for surrounding uses and the site.

The layout of parking and internal roads is addressed in the Pizzey Park Master Plan 2021 which provides for optimised vehicular flow throughout the site.

    What are the next steps?

2025: Community Consultation around design principles for the next stage of the Master Plan upgrade

Early 2026: Draft sketch design to present back to community and key stakeholders for feedback

2026: We will finalise the sketch concept design.

    2027: Construction.

    2028: Site opening.
