Solid Waste Strategy 2024 Mid-term Review

Did you know the Gold Coast Solid Waste Strategy 2024 was adopted almost six years ago? We know the world changes quickly and the way you think about our city changes too, so we want to know what you think about waste now, how it is managed, and how we could all improve!

Whether it’s your household bins and household behaviours, how you pay to have your waste managed and dispose of waste to landfill, or further services the City can offer to ensure we are all minimising the amount of waste entering the City’s landfills and improve recycling and resource recovery. We want to know what you do, and what you want us to do to help the city achieve its goal.

How you can have your say:

  1. Complete our online survey which will take approximately 10 minutes
  2. Tell us your idea on how we might further improve waste management services on the Gold Coast
  3. Book in and attend one of the Q&A sessions with the Waste team

By completing our survey you can go in the draw for a chance to win one of four staycation vouchers valued at $500 to a selection of local hotels/resorts (terms and conditions apply). The hotels and resorts listed participate in our Commercial Food Waste Recycling program, so you know you’re supporting sustainability while enjoying time with your family and friends.

Community engagement runs from Monday 6 September to Sunday 26 September 2021.

The summary engagement report is now available.

  • About the Solid Waste Strategy 2024

The Solid Waste Strategy 2024 was adopted by Council in September 2015 and ensures the City of Gold Coast addresses legislative obligations under the Waste Reduction and Recycling Act 2011 (section 123), to develop a waste reduction and recycling plan. The vision outlined in the Strategy is ‘Managing our resources for a sustainable future’ and the four strategy outcomes are:

The Strategy identifies waste reuse, recycling and recovery as a key objective, with a target to achieve 55 per cent recycling of domestic waste by 2024.

Based on 2021 performance, we are not achieving the defined targets. Further initiatives which will drive significant improvements are required in order to achieve recycling and recovery targets.

The City of Gold Coast is the second largest local government area in Australia and the sixth largest city by population. By 2024, we expect the city to grow another 130,000 residents – that’s more than 60,000 extra homes. One of the by-products of the city’s growth and prosperity is the increased generation of solid waste.

The Solid Waste Strategy 2024 was developed to ensure the city’s solid waste is managed effectively into the future. The strategy provides clear objectives and targets and outlines our approach to sustainably managing the city’s waste. This review will ensure everyone continues to have an opportunity to be part of the solution. Together, we can change the way we think about waste and find the best waste management options for our city.
