- whether the project should proceed.
Has Council decided to build a cableway?
No. Council has not decided to build a cableway. We are investigating a cableway as a concept only. Should a cableway proceed as a project, it would be delivered by the private sector. No preferred corridor, route, landing point or project design has been identified and no decision has been made on whether the project should proceed.
Why is the City investigating a cableway?
We are assessing whether a cableway could provide an environmentally responsible ecotourism and managed-access option for Springbrook. This includes investigating if a cableway could support environmental protection, conservation, managed access, accessibility, environmental education, research and citizen science opportunities, Aboriginal opportunities and ecotourism outcomes.
Why is the City undertaking the investigations rather than a private company?
A cableway could have implications for public infrastructure, environmental management, tourism, cultural heritage and local communities. We have a responsibility to understand these potential impacts and opportunities. Any future cableway, if approved, would be delivered and operated by specialist tourism operators.
What is an ecotourism opportunity?
Ecotourism focuses on experiencing natural environments while supporting environmental protection, conservation, education and long-term stewardship of natural values. We are also investigating whether a cableway could support environmental education, research and citizen science opportunities while helping to manage visitor access.
The investigations are exploring whether a cableway concept could support conservation, regeneration and environmental stewardship outcomes that complement broader environmental initiatives and investments occurring in the Springbrook area.
Why was Springbrook selected as the study area?
In May 2026, Council endorsed Springbrook as the preferred study area for further cableway investigations following a multi-criteria assessment of both Springbrook and Tamborine Mountain as potential locations. Further investigations are now underway within the Springbrook study area.
What investigations are currently underway?
Investigations include environmental, cultural heritage, traffic, technical and economic assessments, together with community, stakeholder and Aboriginal engagement.
What has not yet been decided?
The following have not been determined:
These matters will be informed by technical investigations, community feedback and future Council decisions.
Where will the cableway be located?
No routes have been identified. Council will consider shortlisted corridor investigation areas in July 2026.
What do you mean by corridors?
Corridor investigation areas are broad areas, approximately one kilometre wide, identified for further investigation. They provide a basis for detailed environmental, cultural heritage, traffic, technical and economic assessments, as well as community consultation.
Identifying a corridor investigation area does not mean a route has been selected or approved.
How will community feedback be used?
Community feedback will be considered alongside environmental, cultural heritage, traffic, technical and economic investigations. Feedback will help inform future investigations, consultation materials and future Council decision-making.
