Cableway

The cableway project is a tourism concept aimed at improving controlled access to our stunning hinterland. The concept aims to support sustainable visitation, reducing pressure on sensitive World Heritage environments, and strengthening eco-tourism and First Nations opportunities. A 2020 high‑level pre‑feasibility assessment found the concept could deliver tourism, economic and cultural benefits.

No route has been selected and no design exists. A cableway tourism attraction remains a concept only, and no decisions have been made. Any future cableway project would be delivered by specialist tourism operators, not the City, and would be subject to rigorous environmental and cultural assessments.

Council resolved in December 2025 that the City should undertake the necessary work to investigate and identify potential route options for a cableway. This work is underway and includes community and First Nations engagement research. Broad community consultation is expected to commence from mid-2026.
