Cableway
We are investigating a cableway concept in the Springbrook hinterland as an ecotourism and managed-access initiative.
The concept is being investigated to explore whether a cableway could:
- support environmentally responsible access to the Springbrook plateau
- assist with managing visitation to sensitive natural environments
- support environmental education, conservation, regeneration and long-term environmental protection
- improve accessibility for a broader range of visitors
- create opportunities for Aboriginal cultural experiences and participation
- contribute to the local ecotourism economy.
A 2020 high-level pre-feasibility assessment found the concept may deliver ecotourism, economic and cultural benefits; however, no route corridor was identified at that time, preventing further detailed investigations and meaningful consultation with Aboriginal groups and the broader community.
In December 2025, Council approved the progression of work to identify proposed cableway route corridors and to determine how supportive Aboriginal groups and the broader community are of a cableway.
In May 2026, following a multi-criteria assessment of both Springbrook and Tamborine Mountain, Council endorsed Springbrook as the preferred study area for further assessment.
A report identifying cableway corridors for investigation within the Springbrook study area is expected to be presented to Council in July 2026.

Current engagement activities
We are currently prioritising engagement with Springbrook residents and business owners and operators, who have been contacted to provide feedback. Should Council decide to proceed with further investigation of the potential cableway corridors, broad community consultation will open in August 2026.
