Proposed amendments to the Animal Control Area Register 2021

City of Gold Coast (City) is responsible for animal control areas and is proposing to amend the Animal Control Area Register.

Local Law No. 12 (Animal Management) 2013 enables Council by resolution to designate the whole or any part of a park, reserve, foreshore or bathing reserve, under the control of Council, as an animal control area after duly considering properly made submissions. The proposed amendments to Animal Control Area Register contains the descriptions of animal prohibited areas, dog off-leash exercise areas and the general effects of the proposed amendments as required under the Local Law No. 12 (Animal Management) 2013.

Proposed amendments to the City’s current Animal Control Area Register include:

  • New animal control areas
  • Realigned animal control areas
  • Revoked animal control areas

These animal control areas have been selected for public consultation based on the following principles:

  • Animal control areas where a person is prohibited from bringing a dog at any time. Exclusion where an open space is:
    • Designated a wildlife conservation area
    • Environmentally sensitive
    • Is a known habitat for vulnerable species or is adjacent to these areas; or
    • Is a defined sports field or swimming enclosure
  • Animal control areas designated as an off leash dog exercise area.
    • Reference to the adopted dog off leash area guidelines core principles and criteria to identify specific sites for off leash areas in consultation with internal stakeholders.
  • Animal control areas designated as an off leash or prohibited area to be revoked. Criteria for revoking a designated area includes:
    • Environmental sensitivity frequency
    • Exchange of land ownership
    • Reviewed safety concern
