The concept plan is exploring a range of potential improvements to enhance use of the park, including:

• existing sporting facilities
• new netball facilities
• improved pathways
• parking and access
• landscaping
• community facilities such as playgrounds, picnic shelters and barbecue areas.

The final scope of works will be informed by community feedback, technical investigations and future funding opportunities.

Southport Carrara Netball Association has outgrown its current facilities at Benowa Road Reserve, and participation in netball is continuing to grow. 

Sir Bruce Small Park is being considered as a potential location for new netball facilities. The park offers an opportunity to create a modern, multi-sport precinct with improved infrastructure, better access and shared community facilities that can support a range of sporting clubs and the wider community.

Any decision regarding the future location of netball facilities will consider community and stakeholder feedback, technical assessments and broader planning requirements.

The existing netball facilities at Benowa Road Reserve require significant renewal works to meet current standards. However, even with major upgrades, the site is constrained by its size and other physical limitations, meaning it would not be able to accommodate the projected growth in netball participation or provide the additional courts and supporting facilities needed in the future. 

Relocating to a larger site could provide the space needed for future growth while creating opportunities to share facilities, amenities and parking with other sporting codes as part of a modern, multi-sport precinct.

A concept plan is a high-level document that sets the direction for future development. It illustrates proposed facilities, upgrades and potential layouts, but does not represent a final design.

The concept plan is being developed with input from the community before any detailed design work is undertaken. Future design and delivery stages will be subject to funding and project approvals.

Traffic and parking are key aspects for investigation as part of the project. Technical assessments will be undertaken to understand the potential impacts of the proposed improvements on surrounding roads, intersections and access points.

The concept plan will include improvements to parking and circulation within the park to help manage visitor demand. Any future design will consider vehicle access, pedestrian safety, and traffic management measures where required.

Community feedback will also help identify local traffic concerns that can be considered as planning progresses.

The concept plan will consider additional lighting for sporting facilities and selected park areas. If lighting is to be included, it would be designed in accordance with relevant standards and would be subject to detailed assessment during future planning and approval processes.

Retaining and enhancing the park's green character is an important consideration for this project. The concept plan is expected to include additional landscaping and tree planting opportunities. While some vegetation changes may be required as designs are refined, the project seeks to retain established trees and vegetation wherever possible.

Yes. Community feedback is an important input into development of the concept plan. Feedback will help inform matters such as park amenities, accessibility, pathways, landscaping, recreation opportunities and community facilities. Some project requirements have already been identified, however there are many aspects of the park experience that can be shaped through community input.

The project has identified some requirements that will form part of the concept planning process, including the investigation of relocating netball facilities to Sir Bruce Small Park, provision of sporting infrastructure, lighting upgrades and additional parking. Community feedback could help shape how these elements might integrate with broader park improvements and community facilities.

Consultation will take place in two phases. Feedback gathered in Phase 1 (July to August 2026) will help inform the draft plan. Once the plan has been updated, there will be a second round of consultation to provide feedback on the draft plan. This feedback will be used to help shape the final plan.

An engagement report will be published after each phase of consultation so the you can review the consultation results. When the draft concept plan is finalised it will be published on this page.

Detailed design will occur as a separate process once the final concept plan has been adopted.
