Sir Bruce Small Park upgrade

We are developing concept plans to upgrade and improve Sir Bruce Small Park.

Located in Benowa, Sir Bruce Small Park is a well-used community space featuring open fields for baseball, cricket and AFL, along with playgrounds, picnic areas and opportunities for informal recreation.

As participation in community sport continues to grow across the city, we are planning for the future to ensure the park can meet both organised sporting needs and everyday community use. Our goal is to make the best possible use of the park’s open green space, while maintaining its role as a welcoming, accessible and family-friendly environment.

As part of this process, we are investigating opportunities to support a range of sporting codes at the park, including potential future provision for netball within the precinct. This follows broader planning considerations for sporting facilities in the surrounding area.

What’s being explored

The concept plan is currently considering a range of potential improvements, including:

  • Relocation of netball from Benowa Road Reserve in Ashmore
  • Enhancements to existing sporting facilities to support increased participation
  • Opportunities for improved multi-sport use of the park
  • Improved access, connectivity and internal pathways
  • Parking improvements to support park users and reduce local congestion
  • Upgraded amenities, including playgrounds, picnic areas and community facilities
  • Landscaping and environmental enhancements to improve overall amenity

Community consultation

We will be undertaking a two-phase community consultation process, which is typical for projects of this scale.

Phase 1 – Understanding the park and its use

Consultation is expected to open on the GC Have Your Say platform in July 2026.

This first phase will focus on:

  • Sharing information about the project and the key drivers for proposed improvements (such as supporting growth in sport, improving access, and enhancing park facilities)
  • Gathering feedback from the community about how the park is currently used

We’ll ask questions such as:

  • Why do you visit Sir Bruce Small Park?
  • What do you value most about the park?
  • What would you like to see improved or added?

Feedback collected during this phase will help inform and refine the concept plan.

Phase 2 – The plan

Once the concept plan has been updated based on community input, it will be released for a second round of consultation.

This stage will give the community the opportunity to:

  • Review the draft concept plan
  • Provide feedback on proposed improvements
  • Help shape the final plan
