We recently conducted community consultation on Urban Change Readiness to measure our community’s preparedness for urban change and identify community growth priorities.
More than 3000 community members shared their thoughts on the opportunities and challenges ahead. Through this process we heard what matters most to our community - take a closer look at the findings below.
Community Growth Priorities
A balanced distribution of growth Build new housing in established neighbourhoods rather than developing new suburbs. Choose areas that are well-served by existing services, such as coastal neighbourhoods, inland centres and along new east-west transport routes.
Environmental protection and enhancement Protect and enhance the city's natural environment by preserving green areas, expanding wildlife corridors and bringing nature into urban spaces.
Well-serviced neighbourhoods supporting diverse urban lifestyles Create unique neighbourhoods with a variety of housing options, good transport links and spaces that include nature. Increase the number of homes while improving public amenities such as streets and parks. Make sure new developments help keep the local character. Build higher-density communities near areas with jobs and services to make life convenient and sustainable.
Movement choice Develop an integrated public transport and active transport network, including high-frequency buses, shaded bike lanes and pedestrian-friendly designs. Aim to reduce traffic congestion and offer more ways to move around the city.
Community amenity, services and infrastructure Support growth with well-timed infrastructure delivery and design public spaces that will help people connect, build a sense of community and encourage investment.
High-quality subtropical and nature-connected urban design Create an urban environment that works with nature and supports climate-positive design. Make the most of natural features such as views, breezes and landscapes. Prioritise outdoor living with parks and open spaces to reinforce the Gold Coast’s subtropical character.
Housing choice and diversity Support a variety of housing options, including homes for essential workers and affordable housing. Offer different types of homes such as houses, apartments, townhouses and granny flats to meet the needs of families, seniors, singles, and professionals. Ensure large projects have affordability targets so housing is accessible for people of all income levels.
Jobs and opportunities Focus on growing important industries such as healthcare, education, tourism, construction and professional services. Revitalise underused spaces to support local businesses and create more jobs.
Building trust Build trust with the community by being open and clear in communication, addressing concerns and making sure that development aligns with community values. This will help create well-planned and sustainable growth.
