Why is Coombabah Lakelands Conservation Area being upgraded?

The reserve is one of the City’s most visited conservation areas. It has been identified for an upgrade to enhance park user experience and meet the demands of future park users.

What upgrades does the concept plan include?

The proposed concept plan includes new car parking and vehicle access, upgraded pedestrian and cycle paths to improve connectivity and allow inclusive access for people with mobility impairments, public amenities, picnic facilities, a nature play space, wildlife viewing areas and a lake observational tower.

What is a kangaroo viewing platform and why do we need one?

The kangaroo viewing platform is an elevated structure that provides panoramic views of the open grassland where kangaroos regularly gather. Additional features such as native plantings, roped bollards and handrails have been included in the landscape design to discourage pedestrian access to the animals while they forage and rest. These measures help create safe refuge areas for kangaroos to retreat to when they prefer not to be disturbed, improving the safety for both wildlife and visitors.

Will any trees need to be removed for the site entrance?

The design has been planned to preserve existing mature trees. No canopy trees will be removed as part of the site entrance upgrades including the picnic areas along the trail. Any shrubs or understorey that need to be removed will be done with care, and new trees will be planted where appropriate.

What is the purpose of the proposed education shelter?

The education shelter is a versatile space that serves as both a picnic area and an environmental and cultural learning hub. It provides undercover space for groups to engage in educational activities within the reserve.

Why are trails being upgraded to sealed surfaces?

Coombabah Lakelands Conservation Area is mostly flat, making it ideal for people of all abilities to experience nature and wildlife. The project aims to upgrade over 3.4 kilometres of trails to sealed paths to ensure year-round, inclusive access for people of all abilities. These improvements, along with ramps, seating and shade promote equal participation and comfort for all visitors.

What environmental considerations are being taken into account for the project?

Environmental sustainability is a key priority of the project. The final design will comply with all relevant environmental legislation and guidelines. Special care will be taken to avoid impacts and minimise disturbance to vegetation. Any unavoidable impacts will be managed responsibly and compensated for through planting and habitat restoration in other parts of the reserve.

How is the project considering local cultural heritage values?

The proposed concept plan respects the cultural significance of the site by including only what is necessary to support the reserve and its visitors. Recognising that storytelling is key to caring for Country, the proposed structures and features are designed to encourage sharing of cultural knowledge. We will be consulting with relevant Traditional Owner groups and cultural heritage specialists to co-design interpretive signage. All work will comply with cultural heritage legislation, and any findings or concerns will be managed in partnership with the appropriate stakeholders to ensure respectful and responsible outcomes.
