Broadwater Marine Project Expression of Interest released

The State Government, in conjunction with Gold Coast City Council, has today released the Expression of Interest for what could be the largest integrated tourism development in Queensland’s history.

The Broadwater Marine Project will seek the delivery of a cruise ship terminal on State Government-owned land on the Spit or in the Broadwater.

In addition to the terminal, the project could potentially include hotel, casino, marina and super yacht facilities, retail, entertainment, hospitality, community open space, recreation facilities and a mix of residential and commercial development.

According to research prepared by tourism consultancy firm EC3 Global, the proposed integrated tourism developments have the potential to inject $750 million in additional tourism revenue annually into the Gold Coast economy and create over 10,000 jobs by 2020.

“Today’s announcement is another step towards making a cruise ship terminal for our city a reality,” said Mayor Tate.

“In addition to this, the project has the capacity to deliver a significant boost for our local economy, create local jobs and leave us a lasting piece of tourism infrastructure.”

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate says the city is looking for visionary Expressions of Interest that will set an outstanding benchmark by creating the most impressive development the city and Queensland has ever seen.

“We are seeking a one-of-a-kind draw-card that will define our city and transform us into a truly global destination,” Mayor Tate said.

“We want to see an integrated attraction with global appeal. A must-see addition for Australia’s premier tourism, business and events destination.”

Mayor Tate said he was delighted with the State Government’s support for the delivery of a major project on State-owned land on the Broadwater, including the Spit and Wave Break Island.

He said that proposals will go through a rigorous assessment on the economic, community and environmental aspects and will proceed on the basis of no cost, no risk to government or council.
