FAQs
1. Will this dog off leash area become permanent?
The 3-month trial will allow us to assess the impact this off leash area has to the community, environment and City services. The dog off leash area will only be active for the trial period 1 July – 30 September 2025. The feedback received from the community consultation as well as internal City monitoring and assessments will inform the 2026 Animal Control Area Register amendment report.
2. Why is the trial happening during July to September (winter)?
The months of the trial were chosen to avoid peak turtle nesting and hatching season, which occurs at this beach in the warmer months. Holding the trial from 1 July – September 30 2025 helps reduce the risk of disturbing nesting turtles or emerging hatchlings.
3. Why are the trial hours limited to early morning and evening?
These hours are designed to reduce impact on beachgoers and City operations including lifeguard and beach maintenance. Responsible dog ownership and effective control remains imperative for the trial’s success.
4. Will the trial dog off leash area impact native plants and animals?
The current Broadbeach dog off leash area is a 3-month trial and City is currently undertaking monitoring and ecological assessments. This will contribute to the final recommendation regarding the Broadbeach beach dog off leash area.
Significant marine turtles nest along the Broadbeach shore and may be at risk if dogs are not under effective control. If an off leash dog impacts the breeding place of a significant species, then the owner is in breach of the Section 335 of the Nature Conservation (Animals) Regulation 2020 (Animals Regulation) and penalties may apply.
